Domine, Dominus Noster (LU 1017)
This is a Gradual to be used on the 9th Sunday after Pentecost, and is set in mode 5 (Lydian). It begins with a men's chorus singing all together, and they continue until the verse. Once the verse begins, it is sung by a soloist. After the verse, the chorus comes back in to sing the chant from the beginning up until the verse starts, at which point the chant ends. In other words, this is a simple ABA form, where A is the refrain (chorus) and B is the verse (soloist). It alternates between being neumatic and melismatic for the most part, although even in this chant one can find a few words being done syllabically. It makes me think that most of the chants are probably a mixture of all three rather than falling neatly into one category or another. The music itself has a lot of movement all over the range of the scale. Not very often does it just stay on one neume. It is probably very fun to sing.
