De Profundis (LU 1076)

This is an Offertory from the Proper of the mass in mode 2.  It is to be used on the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost.  It begins with a soloist singing through the entire chant and then being joined briefly by a men's chorus to sing the main part of the text about halfway through.  The text they all sing together is:  De profundis clamavi ad te Domine (out of the depths I cry to you o Lord).  The music is peaceful, but perhaps a little sad sounding, since the mode is almost the same as our own natural minor.  The piece alternates between neumatic and melismatic most of the time.  It is very enjoyable to just sit and listen to it - not quite as enjoyable as listening to it and writing about it.
