This memorable dance piece has always been close to my heart ever since I learned to play a version of it on the piano when I was 12 years old. It is written as a theme and variations type of composition. The melody stays the same each time through with little variations in either tempo, dynamics, bass lines, ornamental notes, etc. What is kind of cool about this piece to me is that when I was younger, after playing the song the way it was written in the book I was using, I ended up adding my own variation to it, which kind of became a trade mark song for me for awhile. I never even knew that by adding a variation I might have just been doing what performers in the Baroque era would do with a piece like this. This particular piece has a majestic, stately sound to it. The bass/chord pattern is: dm - A - F - C - gm - dm - Bb - A.
